Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by high blood sugar levels over a long period of time. Symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger. When you have diabetes, your body either cannot make enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it does make.

There are several different types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks and destroys the pancreatic cells that make insulin. It is unclear what caused the attack. About 10% of diabetics have this type.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body becomes resistant to insulin and sugar accumulates in the blood.

Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar during pregnancy. The insulin-blocking hormone produced by the placenta can cause this type of diabetes.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

As mentioned above, symptoms of diabetes often include frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger.

In addition to the known ones above, they include blurred vision, headache, fatigue, slow wound healing and itchy skin. Prolonged high blood glucose can cause glucose absorption in the lens of the eye, which can lead to changes in its shape, resulting in vision changes.Long-term vision loss can also be caused by diabetic retinopathy. A number of skin rashes that may occur in diabetes are collectively referred to as diabetic dermatosis.

What about diabetes prevention and treatment?

There are no known preventive measures for type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes (85-90% of all cases worldwide) can usually be prevented or delayed by maintaining a normal weight, exercising and eating healthy.

Higher physical activity levels (more than 90 minutes a day) can reduce the risk of diabetes by 28%. Dietary changes known to be effective in preventing diabetes include maintaining a diet rich in whole grains and fiber, and choosing good fats, such as the polyunsaturated fats found in nuts, vegetable oils, and fish.

Limiting sugary drinks and eating less red meat and other saturated fats can also help prevent diabetes. Smoking is also associated with an increased risk of diabetes and its complications, so quitting smoking is also an important preventive measure.

What about the treatment of diabetes?

1. Use insulin

People with type 1 diabetes and some people with type 2 diabetes may need to inject or inhale insulin to keep their blood sugar levels from becoming too high. There are various types of insulin available, and most are grouped according to their duration of action. There are rapid, regular, intermediate and long-acting insulins.

In addition to insulin, other types of drugs can be used to help patients manage their condition.

2. Metformin

For type 2 diabetes, a doctor may prescribe metformin in the form of pills or liquid. It can help lower blood sugar and make insulin more effective. It can also help to lose weight. Healthy weight can reduce the effects of diabetes.

3. GLP-1 receptor agonist

GLP-1 receptor agonists work by increasing the amount of insulin the body produces and decreasing the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream.

Semaglutide is a new long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analog. Semaglutide binds to and activates the GLP-1 receptor, which stimulates a mechanism for increased insulin secretion by the pancreas and decreased glucagon secretion, lowering the blood sugar level.

Liraglutide, is a medication used to treat diabetes mellitus type 2 and obesity.  Liraglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 receptor agonist) also known as incretin mimetics. It works by increasing insulin release from the pancreas and decreases excessive glucagon release.
